The basic parameter of a good quality towel is its grammage. It is generally accepted that the higher the grammage, the “better”. On the one hand, one could agree with this statement, although not always. It all depends on what the towel is to be used for and in what conditions it is to be used. For example, for beach towels or everyday towels, the grammage should not exceed 400g. Why? Well, the lower the grammage, the faster the towels will dry. They will also be lighter than towels with higher grammages. Bath towels are generally characterized by greater water absorption and durability. Therefore, their grammage should oscillate around 500g. Grammages above 500g are “Reserved” for hotel towels. These towels are thick, very durable and characterized by high water absorption. They are pleasant to the touch, soft, but therefore heavier and take up a lot of space when folded.
The second equally important, if not the most important parameter of a good quality towel is the material it is made of. In most cases, the only component of a towel is cotton. Cotton is ideal for their production, it is pleasant to the touch, perfectly absorbs water and at the same time maintains very good utility values, such as resistance to washing or color retention. If we are talking about colors, then of course the most popular ones - especially in the hotel industry are white. On the other hand, towels for home use will be available in a full range of colors, from white to subdued cream shades, ending with strong, contrasting colors.
Finally, we left the issue of cotton towel sizes. Basically, there are 3 sizes of towels. These are: 30×50 cm, 50×100 cm and 70×140 cm.

So what should you consider when buying a towel? First of all, we need to answer a basic question – what will be its purpose? If it is to be a towel that will be used at home. The most appropriate weight will be around 500g. Material? Of course, 100% cotton. The color is subjective, but white will be the most practical. For the hotel industry, we recommend the thicker ones – 550g. cotton towels, which are characterized by very good durability and utility values.

A good summary is that grammage is important, but it is not the most important thing. Rather, when choosing a towel, check the quality of workmanship, finish, and also its size. An important element that we must pay attention to is whether a given cotton towel meets the standard: PN EN 14697:2007, which specifies a tolerance of grammage of up to +/- 5%. Additionally, it would be good if the cotton used to produce the cotton towel we choose had the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certificate - a certificate of safety and protection against harmful chemicals.
